Whichever method of hair removal you use on your underarm, waxing or depilation ensure smooth, hair-free skin. Just stay away from shaving!
They remain hidden for the most part, so they are often neglected in terms of regular grooming. However, the underarms must never be neglected – they sprout hair that traps dirt and sweat. As the sweat dries, the microbes in it are activated and they start releasing odour. After a while, you can suffer body odour that is noticeable even to others.
Instead of masking the body odour with deodorant, you should try removing the underarm hair first. But if you were thinking of shaving it off, don’t!
Why stay away from shaving?
Most women think nothing of taking a razor and shaving off their underarm hair. It is certainly a quick method to remove underarm hair. But shaving has many pitfalls, viz –
- It may nick or injure the skin
- It strips the skin of essential oils and moisture
- It causes the hair to grow back coarser and thicker, with jagged edges that cause a prickly sensation
- The hair grows back as soon as next day. In terms of efficiency, shaving is not a good method at all
- It makes the skin rougher and darker in colour over time
If you are scouting for a good underarm hair remover method, you should try out waxing and/or depilatory creams.
Waxing: Waxing is the process of applying hot wax or a cold wax strip on the underarm skin and then pulling away the strip. When the strip is pulled, it yanks out the hair from the roots. Though it causes some discomfort, it is an effective underarm hair remover technique because it keeps the hair away for about 28 days. During this time, the underarms remain smooth and hair-free. You can wear sleeveless clothing, tube tops or halter neck shirts, etc. When done properly, waxing with a good product nourishes the skin and keeps it supple and radiant. Also, regular waxing is seen to reduce the amount of regrowth, with the hair becoming sparser and finer than before.
Depilation:Depilation is the process in which hair removal cream is applied on the skin to reduce the hair to a jelly like consistency. After a few minutes, the cream makes the hair spongy and detaches it from the skin’s surface. It can then be wiped away with a damp flannel or a sponge. It is a painless underarm hair remover method. However, the hair grows back faster as compared to waxing – in about 4 days after removal – but the skin is nourished and hydrated meanwhile. In some cases, the hair regrowth may even be finer than before.
After waxing or depilation, apply soothing moisturiser to calm the redness and to replenish lost hydration.
