Here’s a little life lesson for fashion hopeful – take tips from your elders. You may think that their sense of style is questionable but do not ever doubt that they know what makes an outfit great. After all, they have seen more fashion trends than you.
Major fashion houses are all for honoring the style sensibilities and options of the much older crowd. In fact, they are the major proponents of what many call the “granny fashion trend,” which focuses on patterns, prints, designs, and silhouettes that are typically associated with Nana and Pops. However, they are now presenting these granny-inspired pieces to a much younger audience, and stylish millennials are now big fans.
If you are all for the comfort of granny fashion but don’t know how to rock it correctly, here are the best tips to follow.
1. T-shirts are your fundamental pieces.
Custom T-shirts with funky embroidery, loud colors, or company picnic images or slogans are the gems of the granny fashion trend. They make the perfect base for the authentic granny-inspired pieces that you can purchase from both thrift stores and high-end retailers.
2. Bottoms are always high-waisted.
There’s nothing more comfortable to wear for more mature people than high-waisted bottoms, be they sweatpants, denim jeans, skirts, and shorts. High-waisted bottoms actually look so much better on younger people because they have fewer sins to hide. Plus, the silhouette created by a high waist is flattering to the trim and tight figure of younger wearers.
3. More is more.
Granny fashion is not a big fan of minimalism. If you can incorporate more to your OOTD, the better. So, do not miss out on the chance to don headwear. Turbans and headwraps are fantastic options. But, if you really like to mix and match, play with promotional hats as well because they’re completely utilitarian accessories that can also serve as statement pieces.
Do not forget eyewear. Oversized frames that literally occupy half of your face or magnify the size of your peepers are great picks – very Professor Trelawney or Tootsie.
4. Wear patchwork or crocheted pieces with casual getups.
There’s no quicker way to turn basic fashion into granny greatness than wearing a patchwork of a crocheted piece such as a vest, cardigan, jacket, or even a bag. A doily or ’70s table runner element to your casual basics is the epitome of granny fashion.
5. Close that neck.
Give your button-up tops a more conservative vibe by doing all of the buttons and closing that neck. Modesty is one of the best characteristics of the granny fashion trends, and it’s an opportunity to show off an elegant neckline without revealing too much skin. Also, invest in more turtlenecks and mock neck tops to pair with other “mature” pieces.
6. Tweed, tartan plaid, argyle, and printed silk are must-haves.
No granny outfit is complete without these pieces. Basically, they are fabrics that you would associate with afternoon tea parties and mahjong sessions with the ladies. But to give them a more contemporary and youthful vibe for weekend brunch with the pals, pair them with sneakers, Birkenstocks, T-shirts, and hoodies.
7. Wear socks.
It may seem odd to wear socks with sandals and high heels, or even pair argyle socks with your Yeezys but for granny fashion, trust that it will work. Play around with prints, patterns, and color to give your overall look that authentic sassy senior citizen vibe.
8. Go to town with accessories.
With granny fashion, you accessorize your accessories. As mentioned earlier, more is with this trend. For example, add brooches and scarves to your bags and hats. Also, accessorize in abundance, mix, and match pieces in a big yet judicious way.
Clearly, granny fashion is all about making the old new again. There truly is nothing much to it other than mixing and matching pieces from days gone by and typical wardrobe staples, and having the right attitude. However, to make the style stand out, you have to be deliberate with accessories and take a courageous step outside of the box.
But, isn’t that ultimately why the seniors of this world rock? They have been there and done that, so, societal standards or what people think cease to matter much to them. They do things differently or march to the beat of their own drum because they have learned that it’s a proven way of survival and having more joy even in the most trivial task of self presentation. Thus, do not just rock granny fashion, imbibe granny wisdom as well.
